How Much Could My Long-Distance Move Cost?
All moves over 50 air miles from Eugene, Oregon are considered long-distance moves. Whereas local moving is calculated at flat hourly rates, these moves are calculated by weight and one way miles between your pickup and drop off locations. These types of moves are broken down into two main categories in Oregon:
Intrastate Moves over 50 air miles from Eugene, OR where the shipment does not leave Oregon
Interstate Moves or moves from Oregon to any other state
Intrastate move pricing (within Oregon) is regulated by the Department of Transportation. By law, we are not able to offer flat rates for long-distance moves, and companies that offer such are likely unlicensed. Refer to our guide on how to verify a moving company’s credentials before booking.
There is more flexibility in pricing for interstate moves, but each company that offers such must have a valid MC number and must maintain their own pricing tariff.
The amount of movers and estimated hourly costs are almost always included in the weight/mile estimates, meaning it is up to the company to figure out what crew size and truck size makes the most sense for your move. This rewards efficient movers and moving teams. Some companies, like us, do direct shipments in box trucks, meaning your items will not be mixed with other another homeowner’s items and we can deliver in about as long as it would take you to drive to the new location.
National companies, also known as Van Lines, will use 53′ tractor trailers and group your shipment with other homeowner’s items. Delivery times can be 30 days or more, and often your items are loaded and unloaded into a warehouse at least once or twice prior to delivery. The price is usually cheaper, but as you can imagine, this is where things get messy fast.
This calculator gives you a rough estimate based on your home size and the mileage of your move. Your final quote will be customized after we review your inventory, access, and specific needs such as packing and storage.
Accessorial Charges
Since the charges for long-distance moves only include charges for the weight and miles, this does not include additional accessorial charges such as moving valuation charges, packing, storage, or if the crew needs to work overtime unexpectedly to complete your job.
Other factors that influence long-distance moving costs:
- Multiple flights of stairs or an elevator
- Specialty Items like pianos, antiques, large appliances
- Packing and unpacking services
- Walk distance from truck to entrance (Long Carry)
- Elevators and/or Stairs
